GREAT WHITE SHARK Lydia is no ordinary sea creature.
In fact, she’s a very special one.
The shark is making history by becoming the first of her species to be tracked crossing the Atlantic from west to east, and it looks like she’s going to end up in Irish waters.
Lydia began her journey in Florida one year ago, where she was tagged and released into the ocean near Jacksonville by research organisation OCEARCH.
The shark has travelled more than 30,000km in the past 12 months and is finally on the verge of making it in to the history books.
“There is no doubt from the current position of the shark, we are seeing a great white heading into European waters for the first time”, marine biologist Kevin Flannery told the Sunday Independent.
He thinks Lydia could hit Irish waters any time now, but it’s impossible to predict when or if she will arrive because she isn’t swimming in a straight line.
Flannery doesn’t believe she’s the first shark to make the journey from west to east, but said he was very excited about her progress:
There are obviously more of these sharks and there have been in the past but because of the tag we are able to see it for the first time ever. It is fantastic to be able to see this.

You can follow Lydia's progress online using OCEARCH's official tracker, which last placed her somewhere in the mid-Atlantic on March 7th.
